How the World's Largest Electric Motor Got Off the Ground
Heart Aerospace built the X1 to prove out a propulsion system far bigger than anything previously flown on battery power alone. At more than 25,000 pounds at takeoff, the aircraft sits closer in size to a small regional airliner than to the light electric planes that have flown before it. That scale is the point: the company needed to show its motor and battery setup could actually lift something this heavy off a runway and sustain flight, not just spin on a test bench.
The numbers behind the flight cost make for a striking contrast. Jet fuel in the United States has been running around $3.50 a gallon, up 63 percent from a year earlier, according to Heart. The federal Energy Information Administration projects wholesale jet fuel will average $3.37 a gallon through 2026, and the International Air Transport Association figures airlines will collectively spend close to $350 billion on fuel this year, nearly a third of their total operating costs. Set against that backdrop, a $5 electricity bill for a 27 minute flight stands out, even though the comparison only goes so far.
Why the Comparison to Jet Fuel Only Goes So Far
The X1 carries no passengers and was never meant to enter commercial service. It exists purely to test propulsion hardware, so stacking its energy cost directly against a fueled airliner's economics is misleading at this stage. What matters more is that Heart now has flight data on a megawatt class electric system installed in an airframe of real commercial relevance, rather than a scaled down prototype.
That data feeds directly into the ES-30, Heart's planned 30 seat hybrid electric regional aircraft. The company says the ES-30 should fly up to 125 miles on batteries alone and as far as 500 miles using its hybrid system, with a targeted charging time of 30 minutes. Heart projects operating costs coming in more than 40 percent lower than existing regional aircraft, and it is aiming for commercial service by 2031.
Airlines Are Already Placing Bets
United Airlines and Air Canada are among the carriers behind $9.4 billion in customer commitments Heart says it has secured for the ES-30. That kind of order book, still years ahead of certification, signals that airlines see enough promise in electric regional flying to lock in early positions.
Heart is now building its first pre production ES-30 at a pilot manufacturing plant in Los Angeles, with flight testing penciled in for 2028. The gap between now and then leaves plenty of engineering to sort out, from battery density to certification hurdles, but the X1's short hop over upstate New York gives Heart something concrete to point to as it works toward putting a full sized electric airliner into passenger service.
