Amazon Near Windsor: New Wind Power Deals in Sweden

Amazon just expanded a record German wind deal and signed four new Swedish agreements, all to power AI driven data centers…

Anyone searching for an Amazon facility near Windsor is likely thinking of the retail giant's warehouses, but the company's biggest recent moves are happening far offshore, in the wind swept waters of the Baltic Sea and the coastlines of Sweden. Amazon has expanded a record setting German power deal and signed four new agreements in Sweden, all aimed at feeding its data centers with carbon free electricity.

The Windsor Connection and Why Location Still Matters

There is no Amazon power project actually near Windsor, England or Windsor, Ontario in this announcement. The news centers on Germany and Sweden. But the search interest itself points to something real: people increasingly associate Amazon with physical infrastructure well beyond delivery vans and fulfillment centers. The company's footprint now stretches into offshore wind farms, and understanding where that footprint sits, and where it doesn't, matters for anyone trying to track the company's actual energy strategy versus its retail operations.

Expanding the German Deal

In June, Amazon signed what became Germany's largest ever power purchase agreement. On Friday, the company added to that deal, agreeing to buy 600 megawatts of carbon free electricity from the Gennaker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. The purchase gives developer Skyborn Renewables the financial backing needed to move ahead with construction. Once running, Gennaker is expected to generate enough power for more than one million German households each year.

Four New Wind Farms in Sweden

Amazon also announced four separate power purchase agreements tied to new wind projects in Sweden, developed by Eolus AB and OX2 AB. These additions push Amazon's carbon free energy capacity in Sweden toward 1 gigawatt, enough to supply more than 350,000 Swedish households annually. Counting these four, Amazon has now backed nine utility scale wind projects across the country. Gulfem Toygar, the company's Sweden country manager, framed the investments as part of a broader push to add carbon free capacity to the grid rather than simply securing supply for Amazon alone.

Why Hyperscalers Are Chasing Wind Power

The timing lines up with a broader scramble among large technology companies for reliable, carbon free electricity. The International Energy Agency reported in April that electricity demand from data centers jumped 17 percent last year, while demand from AI focused data centers surged 50 percent. Both figures dwarfed the 3 percent growth in overall global electricity demand. Amazon, alongside rivals running similarly power hungry AI operations, is locking in supply now because grid capacity in many regions is becoming a genuine constraint on how fast these companies can expand computing infrastructure.

What Happens When AI Demand Keeps Outpacing Supply?

Amazon's wind investments buy time, not certainty. If AI driven electricity demand keeps climbing at anywhere near last year's pace, even a near gigawatt Swedish portfolio and a 600 megawatt German deal will represent a small slice of what hyperscalers eventually need. The open question is whether wind development, permitting and grid connections in Europe can scale fast enough to keep pace with the appetite Amazon and its competitors are building.
